Karin Sweigart

Karin supports Dhillon Law Group’s litigation and appellate practice groups and cochairs the student rights practice group. Her practice specializes in student rights, constitutional law, free speech, defamation, and anti-SLAPP. She regularly appears on television, radio, and in print publications discussing recent litigation and advances in the law. Some of her client’s recent wins include:

  • A million-dollar jury verdict on behalf of private school students expelled without due process.
  • California court of appeals victory on behalf of a defamed high school student.
  • In a case of first impression, winning the right for a sexual assault victim sued for defamation to use a pseudonym.
  • Overturning a restraining order restricting client’s protected speech rights through an anti-SLAPP motion.
  • Forcing public officials to rewrite unconstitutional government policies and compensate client for their rights violations.

Outside of court, Karin serves as a trusted advisor helping individuals with diverse issues such as defamation, due process, Title IX, and violations of constitutional rights. She helps clients navigate sensitive legal topics both in court and in the court of public opinion and excels at finding creative solutions to unique legal challenges.

Karin attended Fordham University on a basketball scholarship, graduating Cum Laude in 2001. After graduation, she served in the California State Legislature as a Jesse M. Unruh Fellow before attending and graduating cum laude from the University of St. Thomas School of Law in 2005. She served for eight years as a Legislative Counsel in the United States Congress where she supported members of Congress serving on the Judiciary Committee and the Committee on House Administration. After leaving Congress, she served a variety of non-profits in legal and executive capacities, advised multiple law firms as a legal writing consultant, and taught legal writing at the Dickinson School of Law before joining the Dhillon Law Group in 2020. Karin is admitted to practice law in California, Pennsylvania, Missouri, the United States Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, all federal districts in California, and the Middle and Eastern Districts of Pennsylvania.
