More recently, there’s been a realization that getting in with lawmakers can be vital to easing regulatory burdens.

For instance, Anne Wojcicki, CEO of genetic-testing company 23andMe, has spent months working the Food and Drug Administration to get approval for her company’s DNA health test that analyzes a saliva sample. Wojcicki has also cut checks this year to big Democratic organizations, including $30,000 to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and $20,000 to the Democratic National Committee.
