In Washington for the inauguration of President Trump, I saw the streets thronged with hundreds of thousands of Americans, sharing their happiness in witnessing a peaceful transition of power. As a Republican from San Francisco, where we cautiously reserve our views on the election for meetings populated exclusively by conservatives, it was refreshing — even exhilarating — to see so many openly expressing patriotic fervor on the streets, in bars, restaurants and at galas, and speaking with hope and relief about the coming years.
